Here’s How to make that rolling hard techno kick bass you hear in loads of modern hard techno, in Sara Landry sets, as well as older Chris Liebing style schranz techno. It’s an off beat double kick to make the track really pump, then I add a delay to it so it’s got that rhythmically pumping delay rumble to it too. It’s a really easy technique of copying the kick, tweaking it slightly then processing the kick and bass together….
Here’s what we’ll be making…

How To Make A Hard Techno Bass Gallop
For a hard techno rumble gallop like this you want to set up a kick, copy it and process them both together in a group, follow these steps:
Step 1: set up a 909 kick drum
Set up the main kick drum – a 909 kick is a good idea, set up the midi as a standard 4 to the floor drum pattern. You can process it a bit, but not too much as it will be distorted more in the next step…
Step 2: add the kick channel to it’s own group
Put the kick channel into a Group and distort it there… The reason for this is that the ‘gallop’ bass needs to be processed the same as the kick. You want to get your main kick sounding good first, then add the gallop to the same group. I add an Amp, Drum Buss and another Amp to the Group and tweak it until the kick sounds good.
Step 3: copy the kick, keep it in the same group
Then I copy the kick drum channel and keep it in the Group. This will be our ‘gallop’ or rumble kick. This is an off beat double kick, I set it up with this midi pattern:
I should sound like this:
Step 4: process the bass with delay
I then filter the ‘gallop’ down in the sampler to trim off the higher punchiness of the kick. Then I add process the gallop bass with a delay. You want it synched so you get an in-time rhythmic pumping bass.
Here’s my delay settings….
So now you have that double kick effect and a pumping delay rumble sub.
Step 5: sidechain the bass to the main kick
It’s a good idea to tidy the mix up as with two kick, one can get lost in the mix when they both hit at the same time, so I then sidechain the ‘gallop’ it to the original kick (this also makes it pump rhythmically). This is so that when the main kick hits the gallop lower in volume for a split second, which keeps it clean in the mix.
Step 6: process it more with filters and distortion
Then process the bass some more (but remember that this gallop is going through the distortions in the Group already)… I distort the gallop more and filter it down and eq it, with these settings:
Step 7: tweak the group and both channels to finish
Then after that you want to tweak the processing and eqs of the kick, the gallop and the group as well. Keep tweaking them all to you get it sounding good.
It should sound like this:
Ideas to tweak the Bass and make it your own
To get different results and make it your own, you can use different kicks, try making them short and long and seeing what happens. Also changing the delay time , feedback and mix settings will change the sound a lot, as well as using different distortion and filtering settings on both the bass channel and group.
