A run down of the Ableton Operator Presets…
There’s 3 presets of FM house bass inspired by old FM house basslines, synths like the Yamaha DX7 and tracks like Ron Hardy’s Sensation. The presets are all either 3 or 4 operator, frequency modulated bass patches that use filter envelopes and built in saturation.
FM House Bass 1 is a simple 2 Op FM Bass with tight FM envelopes for a plucky bass. Both sinewaves. The second oscillator has a really short decay for that plucky bass sound.
The second preset FM House Bass 2 has an added sub bass by using the ‘reverse L’ routing on Operator. That’s not what it’s called ,but you know what I mean! It has 3 Operator FM, then the extra one on the side is an independent sub bas oscillator. Turn up Osc D for the 3rd level of FM to go from a raw house bass to more industrial/EBM metallic goodness!
And FM House Bass 3 has a velocity modulation on the filter for a moving sequence. So draw in different velocities for a moving sequence. This is a 3 Oscillator FM patch, but uses a Saw wave on Osc 3 for more harmonics. Turn up Osc 3 for more harsher FM tones and the filter drive too. The preset can go from raw 80s Chicago house to industrial really quickly with the metallic FM sounds.
