Welcome to our guide to Arturia Jup-8 V Techno Presets. The Arturia Jupiter 8 clone has a built in step sequencer so you can sequence notes and modulations too, which make it great for techno sequences.
The Jupiter 8 is a great keyboard, especially the cross modulation feature which is basically exponential FM. But this digital version has built in effects and two sequencers – one for notes and one for modulation and I’ll show you here how it can be used for rolling techno sequences…
I’ve made 5 free sequence presets too, which you can get in the Downloads section below. They are made on Version 4 of the plugin.

How To Make Techno Sequences using Arturia’s Jup-8 V
Here’s a step by step guide to setting up a sequence patch in Arturia’s Jup-8 V VST….
To set up a sequence I will draw a long midi note around C1, then drop the VCF Cutoff low, the Mod up, and all ENV-1 sliders to low. I’ll tweak the cross mod to taste, and unison. Then tweak the oscillators. The I’ll tweak both sequencers and select what to modulate with the Mod Sequencer. I’ll go into more detail in the following steps…
(See the downloads section below for the free presets).
Step One – set up the midi
Draw a long midi note at the key you want. It will make a long note to start with, but we’ll set up the sequencer in the next step to split it into 1/16 notes…..
Step 2 – set up the sequencer
With techno sequences you want to enable the sequencers – there are two, one for notes and one for modulation. These are great to be honest, every VST needs them!
You want to click ‘Advanced’ in the top bar of the VST to access these, and then head to the Sequencer section. You can can enable them with the ‘on’ buttons next to their names.

Switch on the ‘Notes Sequencer’ And then the sequencer will start running. You can just draw in some values to get different notes to start with. We’ll go back and tweak these later. I change the loop length by changing the red arrow at the top of the sequencer. Something like 5, 6, or 7 is going to be good for those short, rolling techno sequences.
You can see in the image below I’ve set up a 7 note sequence.

Step 3 – set up the mod sequencer
The Mod Sequencer is similar to the Notes Sequencer, but you can assign 3 different modulation sources on the right. I like to modulate Cross Mod, Filter Cut off and Filter Envelope decay time.
You can see in the image below I’ve set up Cross Mod and Filter Envelope Decay to begin with. Cross Mod movement will change the harsh FM harmonics for each note and the filter decay will create movement as the note lengths will be different for each step in the sequence. You can set the things you want to modulate from the drop down menus, and then the amount to the right.
You also can set different loop lengths for the 2 sequences for that ‘modular’ effect of loops running out of time with each other. For now I’ve set it to 7, the same as the Notes sequencer. I’ve drawn in some values for now.

Step 4 – set up the filter envelope
When patching the synth I like to set a low filter cut-off and short settings on the Env-1 filter envelope. This creates a short gated sequence. And modulating the decay of ENV-1 with the Mod Sequencer will open the gate up differently for each note and create movement as I mentioned in the step before, each step will be different. You can see the very short ENV-1 settings in the image below, just slight decay and sustain.
You can set the amount of filter modulation with the MOD slider to the right of the filter settings.

Step 5 – set up the synth patch
You can set up the synth patch like you would patch an analog synth… it has unison and PWM for some great detuned sounds. But the thing about a Jupiter 8 is it has cross mod (or ‘CROSS’), which is a fairly harsh FM modulation of VCO-1 with VCO-2 and can lead to almost whitenoise-like tones. The great thing about the mod sequencer is you can modulate this amount for some insane techno sequences.
The Oscillator shapes and pitch of VCO2 will affect cross mod a lot too. Just tweak it until it sounds good.
The Oscillator mix section will have a big effect on the sound. If you’re using Cross mod you probably want to hear mainly VCO-1 (VCO-2 is modulating it so does not necessarily need to be heard).
Another feature of the synth that is good is the Unison Detune as I mentioned above. You need to make sure the ‘Voice Assign’ (to the left of the arpeggiator) is in ‘UNI’ mode and you can get some great EBM detuned sounds.
I tweak all these until I get some thing I like.
Step 6 – set up the effects
When in the ‘Advanced’ section, you can add up to 3 effects. Th Overdrive is great for adding distortion with character, and I normally add delay and reverb here too.
Step 7 – go back and tweak the sequencers and synth
You then want to go back and tweak the sequencer and synth settings to make sure you have everything working well with each other, and the modulation values and amounts. You can decide here what you will automate or tweak throughout your track – Filter cutoff, and the envelope settings especially.
