How To Make a Drum n Bass Reese In Ableton

Here’s how I made the one in the preview…

This is a drum n bass reese bassline made only in Ableton’s Wavetable with no other processing. I love old skool drum n bass, especially the Ed Rush and Optical, Dillinja, Bad Company era.
The patch is made from putting all 3 osculators on: the sub and main 2. The main 2 are set to ‘Sub 2’ and ‘Sub 1’ waveforms. I detuned the mains oscillators by -40 and +40 for a massive detuned sound so the oscillators beat against each other.

Distortion is a key part of this sound, so I put both filters on (with the OSR distortion type) and add drive to both of them.

I then want to get more movement with the filter, so I cut the cutoff down and make it move with an LFO. I put the resonance up a bit so the movement(wobble) is more noticeable.

I add the wavetable effects to the each waveform, they only need to be on slightly, then I will modulate them with a slow attack envelope so they move each time a note is played. I use the Modern FX on each wavetable, and try to find something that sounds great. Then I assign Fold for both main Oscillators to Env 3 (with a bit of attack on it) and same for Oscillator 1 Position. I tweak the original settings and the modulations amount and envelope to taste. Now the bass is alive and moving loads.

That’s the basics of the sound. I haven’t done so here as it ‘s just a Wavetable patch, but you can process is after with distortion too, Amp and Drum Buss too.

Some other things to try: use other waveforms, and different wavetable effects. They’ll have a big effect on the character of the mass.
